When specifying aluminum fenestration for high-performance or luxury projects, profile wall thickness is one of the most overlooked—and most consequential—decisions. Here’s why 2.0mm has become the new baseline for serious work, and why 1.4mm profiles fall short.
The 1.4mm Reality
Many imported and budget-oriented systems use 1.4mm (or thinner) extruded aluminum. That might sound “close enough” to 2.0mm, but in structural and durability terms, the gap is large. Thinner walls mean:
- Reduced rigidity — more deflection under wind load and under the weight of large glass units.
- Weaker corner and joint integrity — fasteners and welds have less material to bite into.
- Faster wear on hardware and seals because the frame flexes more in use.
For fixed lights or small openings, 1.4mm can be acceptable. For large sliders, lift-slide doors, or anything carrying heavy glass, it’s a compromise that shows up in callbacks and in long-term performance.
